Welcome back to ThatFOODandWINEshow. This episode focuses on Cabernet Sauvignon from the Stags Leap District, a sub-appellation of Napa Valley, California. Cabernet Sauvignon remains California’s most popular wine varietal and therefore, its most important grape. California Cabs are typically big, bold, tannic table wines that are best paired with rich dishes such as steak. Of course, this may not always be the case when taking into account such variables as where the fruit comes from, vintage, winemaker crafting, etc. Today’s episode showcases one wine from the Stags Leap District. Stags Leap acquired its reputation in 1976 when a Stags Leap Cabernet, judged blind by a French panel in France bested all of its competition. Since then, California wines have been considered world-class.
The featured wine on today’s show was Alterra Winemaker’s Reserve Stags Leap Cabernet - 2006 vintage. This wine was elegant in style with flavors of currant, plum and raisin nicely integrated with hints of cedar and tobacco. Mild in acidity, tannic structure and sweetness, this wine does not require the assistance of a big steak to be enjoyed. I scored this wine 84 points — however it was not disappointing. Stags Leap cabernets are typically more costly than what I found this one for ($20.00 US) so if you can find a good bargain, its worth the investment to see if its your cup of tea.

A classic Rutherford Cab with full violet-ruby color and distinctive local aromas of black cherry, dark olive and mineral, combined with hints of smoky oak and blackberry. The fine flavors echo the nose. Medium acidity and body plus supple tannins. With a fine balance between alcohol, fruit and tannin, this young wine already drinks well and will support 6-10 years aging.
