Raccoon Willie: Holiday Grapes

Posted by admin on January 4, 2009 under grapes

Willie was gone for seven days out in the freezing ice and snow, but now he’s back, and he’s covered in chimney soot, and he smells like BURNT WOOD!

We threw him a party, and fed him some jumbo holiday grapes from Hy-Vee. He loves them!!!

Thanks to all the Raccoon Willie fans who left the nice posts and comments on the MySpace blog. It really meant a lot!

Oh, and you can actually see all the remodeling that been happening over the past few months. Willie really jacked the place up! lol

How many grapes are equal to a portion?

Posted by admin on December 29, 2008 under grapes

What is a reasonable amount of grapes to consume in order for it to count as 1 of the 5 recommended portions of fruit and veg per day?

In general, a serving of fruit is considered to be about 1/2 cup, or one medium sized fruit in the case of nonsegmented fruits such as apples and pears.

The noted exception is bananas; one banana is two fruit servings.

How does the current soil erosion problem in the US connect to the Grapes of Wrath?

Posted by admin on December 27, 2008 under grapes

I have to do a power point on it and I don't even know where to start. I know about the dust bowl in the Grapes of Wrath but I need help.

For one thing during the dust bowl the top soil blew away and they were unable to grow food or pasture for animals to feed on.
They removed the naturally growing switch grass that doesn't blow away and holds the soil together and actually made good pasture.
Which is deep rooted and doesn't need a lot of water.
So it was mismanagement of the area, that it didn't need to happen.
They planted trees with early blooms which they have a late freeze that killed the blooms. Now they plant late blooming trees.
With the scare food supply many starved to death.
Since then in the 1960's they built a huge lake, Eufaula, and many other man made lakes, all around Oklahoma.
So that the climate of that area has changed and the summers are not so hot and the winters not so cold. They have water for irrigation.
Cotton weevils destroyed the plants and the cotton. Which destroyed jobs and income. They have an abundance of deeply rooted switch grass which before ripping it out made great pasture land.
So they reverted back to raising cattle for food and income. The land was let go back to this pasture feed of switch grass which stopped the dust bowl and soil erosion problem.
They learned from their mistakes and now they have a healthy economy. You cannot make the ground do what you want by force.
You have to work with the ground to let it help you to survive.
That is why the Indians had lived so long.

The Descendents - Sour Grapes

Posted by admin on December 26, 2008 under grapes

After you watch this video, you can watch a video of my little brother singing a part of it haha: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c4zQrjRigKc

I couldn’t find any videos with this song and I love it. So I made one myself :]
Here are the lyrics!

Hey you, new wave, come over here
You’re the prettiest thing I’ve seen all year
Hey you, new wave, don’t turn away
Close those pouty lips and listen to what I say

Why must you smoke that clove cigarette?
Why must you act like you’ve got a hole in you head?
Why don’t you split the squares and love me instead?

You’re all shiny and clean, I’ve seen you in my dreams
Like the Rolls Royce I can’t have
Your presence makes me scream

Sour grapes - you leave such a bad taste
Sour grapes - I don’t need you anyways
Sour grapes - feeding, feeding my rage

Hey you, new wave, I pity you
When you get old, what will you do?

What will you do when you turn 21?
You’re cockteasing at the singles bar just for fun
What will you do when you turn 31?
What will you do when you don’t know how to love anyone?

I wanted her cherry, I got sour grapes
I refuse to climb the ladder for you
I refuse to pant and paw for you
I need love, don’t need no beauty queen
But still, when I look at you, I scream

Sour grapes - you leave such a bad taste
Sour grapes - I don’t need you anyways
Sour grapes
Just go riding right by me on the crest of the new wave
Sour grapes - feeding, feeding my rage

How do you clean seedless Grapes?

Posted by admin on December 23, 2008 under grapes

I just brought home a bunch of Green Seedless Grapes from the grocery store & the skin has a terrible bitter taste. I can also see a milky coating on them. I suspect that it is some kind of insecticide. I tried rinsing them in water but the stuff is still there. Is there something that I can get to soak them in that will get rid of this cr*p on my grapes?

It’s mostly harmless wax, says Kay Bogart, a winemaker who works in outreach for the University of California at Davis’s viticulture program. The grape plant produces it to protect the berries from moisture loss. It’s also often just plain old dust, adds Jim LaMar, a professor of wine sensory evaluation at California State University, Fresno. Until recently, winemakers believed the white stuff was yeasts, responsible for wine fermentation. Now they believe such yeasts are airborne. In any case, that white stuff isn’t pesticide residue. Which is not to say that there isn’t pesticide residue on the grape, so wash it anyway before you pop it into your mouth.

When can I expect my grapes to ripen at my altitude?

Posted by admin on December 21, 2008 under grapes

I live in western, MA. This is the first year I have seen grapes on my vines. I live at 1200 ft. Everything is a bit behind here.

Approximately when can expect to eat my grapes?

It depends more on the variety of the grape than on your elevation. Some varieties are early season, some midseason, some late season. Also, a hotter summer will ripen the grapes earlier than a cool and rainy one. So there is not a specific answer to your question without more information.

I grow 2 kinds of grapes, both considered "early." Depending on the weather conditions, I begin picking them in late July or early August. I live at a much lower elevation than you, in a milder climate. When they look as if they are ripe, I will pick one or 2 grapes from a cluster to taste test them. If they aren't as sweet as they should be, I will leave them for a couple of days and then try again. Late season grapes around here ripen in September and early October.

You will probably get your best information from locals, maybe from a local plant nursery. But the taste test is the most accurate way of knowing when your grapes are ready.
