A little new to the world of wine. Could use a some help. Thanks!
You're looking for a simple answer to a complex question… There are three major ranges in price to wines… Entry level wines are in the $3 to $10 a bottle range. Mid-priced are $10 to $30 a bottle and the higher prices ones are $30 and up. When I say up, you can spend $300 on a bottle of wine if you have the money or are stupid enough - ha!
Now, when you say "well known", that doesn't mean good. McDonald's is "well known", but I would think that everyone would agree that it's not fine dining. Here are some good wineries that produce good entry to mid-level level Cabs:
Chateau St. Michelle
Columbia Crest
Crandall Brooks
Sterling Vineyards
BV Vineyards
I'd start there and see how you like it. You can always splurge on more expensive wines once you develop a taste for it. Also, when you start, if you buy a wine for under $15 a bottle, I always buy two. That way, if you happen to open a wine that may be a little "young" and could stand some aging, you can always store that second bottle and open it in a year or two. However, wine making techniques have come a long way in the past 25 years, so most wines a meant to be drank when you buy them.
