After a party we have an open box of wine (cabernet) left. What is the proper storage temperature?

Posted by admin on August 31, 2008 under cabernet

We will probably drink it in the next week or so. Do we need to refrigerate it or can we leave it at room temp?

Room temperature should be fine as long as you didn't chill it to begin with; if so just leave it in the fridge…but it shouldn't spoil. Box wine will keep for almost a month because of the pour spout and packaging. Good Luck to you!

What's a good red Zinfandel or Shiraz available in HEBs?

Posted by admin on August 31, 2008 under shiraz

Got a date saturday night, we're going to make pizza from scratch and probably a berry crostada for dessert. HEB recommended these two wines for both the pizza and dessert. What's a good year and brand for these? Or would you suggest a different type of wine?

Italian wines are made for pizza… after all pizza came from Italy. However, our pizzas are very different than pizzas in Italy, so the most widely available wine (Chianti) is often too acidic to match your traditional American tomato sauce.

The key is to find a good wine that can cut through the grease of the pizza by having a bit of acidity, but still have enough fruit and spice left over to give your mouth something interesting and to go with the richness of the tomato sauce.

Zinfandel is good, but some fruitier light Italian wines (Southern or other Sangiovese besides Chianti) are a better idea to me and might do well with your berry crostada.

Dancing Bull Zinfandel is widely available. I've dranken too much in my lifetime of that wine so I can't do it any more, but it is very pleasant and a good pizza wine.

Cantina Zaccagnini Montepulciano d'Abruzzo is one I can usually find at Sam's Club, so maybe it is available at HEB. This is one tasty Italian wine, and is going to be a little more satisfying and elegant thank Dancing Bull.

Others I like:
A Mano Primitivo Puglia (Primitivo is the Italian Zinfandel)
Yalumba Shiraz
Fat Croc Shiraz
Blackstone Zinfandel
Any Aglianico if you can find it

Good luck!

what can you recommend for a good bottle of merlot that will not kill my wallet?

Posted by admin on August 31, 2008 under merlot

i got a friend that is moving from NV to TX and i will like to give him a bottle of very good merlot.

Try Trader Joes.
They have such a large selection at really good prices and don't be afraid to ask for help.
Costco also has a really decent selection.
Try to find a 2004 or 5 the prices dropped on the red wines due to the over production recently. For under $10 you can get a great bottle.

What type of grapes produce the best homemade wine?

Posted by admin on August 31, 2008 under grapes

I made wine with my father-in-law for two seasons, but he is now deceased. I can remember buying a grap called muscado (dont know if I am spelling it correctly) or another one begining with an "M"

Please let me know what you thing. I have a store near the house that sells the grapes by the case.

It was very likely "Muscadine" grapes.

These are frequently used for home winemaking.

"Muscat" grapes are a commonly used grape for making dessert wines (Muscato) but is not frequently used for home winemaking unless you specifically get the grapes or concentrate from a home brewing store or vineyard.

how long does it take to get to standish,mi from flint,mi?

Posted by admin on August 31, 2008 under standish

I've made the drive numerous times and in my opinion it only takes around an hour- sometimes less. I'm not sure what it says on mapquest or other direction sites, but it isn't that bad of a drive. Now if you get stuck in the construction (which starts around Bridgeport and goes through Saginaw), thats a different story. It could take a good 1.5 hours.
